We always seek motivated PostDocs, Ph.D. students, visiting Ph.D. students and B.Sc./M.Sc. thesis students interested in robust machine learning. Based on availability, we also offer student assistant (HiWi) jobs; if your studies require doing lab rotations, also feel free to reach out.
The ideal candidate
In general, we are looking for students with good analytical skills who are highly motivated, curious, and creative. Ph.D. Applicants should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related field. We can also accept students with a 4-year Bachelor's degree in exceptional circumstances. A good mathematical understanding, very good coding, and strong English skills (reading, writing, and speaking) are required. Prior research experience and a background in machine learning and/or computer vision are expected. This document provides more information on the application process and the required materials.
Ways to work with us and how to apply
There are several ways to work with us (availability of these positions varies across the year):
PostDoc
- A PostDoc will typically receive funding for 2-3 years to work on cutting-edge research topics in our group, help supervise PhD students and develop the necessary skills to become an independent researcher.
- PostDocs must possess a Ph.D. degree and must have published in top-tier computer vision or machine learning venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ECCV, CoRL, SIGGRAPH).
- To apply, email wieland.brendel@tuebingen.mpg.de with a research statement, resume/CV, list of two referees, research and code samples, and your transcripts.
Ph.D. Student
- A Ph.D. student typically works with us for 3-4 years, during which time we will provide funding.
- Ph.D. applicants should possess a Masters degree.
- We only hire through the ELLIS, International Max Planck Research School, and CLS graduate programs.
Visiting Ph.D. Students
- Visiting students possess a Master's degree and are ideally in the 2nd or 3rd year of their Ph.D. program with at least one publication in a major conference (e.g., NeurIPS, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NIPS, ICML).
- Substantial research requires time; hence applicants must be committed to visiting us for 6 months.
- Applications for shorter periods will not be considered. To apply, use our online form.
Interns/B.Sc./M.Sc. Thesis Students/Lab rotations
- We continuously offer B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses and internships in the context of our current research. As our field advances quickly, we do not maintain a list of thesis projects; we determine these topics on demand.
- You need a solid math (analysis, algebra, statistics) and programming (python, PyTorch) background and prior experience in machine learning, computer vision or both. If you don't, please take the relevant courses before approaching us. You should additionally be familiar with our latest research (for the last 2 years).
- We do accept international applications, but only if the fit is exceptionally good. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applicants from sanctioned countries. To apply, use our online form.
Student Assistants (HiWis)
- We occasionally hire student assistants to support us in teaching and research. Student research assistants study at the University of Tübingen and typically work closely with our lab members on a 40h/month basis.
- The topic of the student assistantship must not overlap with the topic of a potential B.Sc./M.Sc. thesis or research project conducted in our lab (i.e., students can either obtain credits or are being paid), and typically, the topics support our work but are not core research topics as B.Sc./M.Sc. theses or research projects.
- To become a student assistant, you must have obtained very good grades (top 10%) and taken relevant courses (e.g., Deep Learning, Computer Vision, etc.). To apply, use our online form.
